Doesn't time fly...is it really four weeks since Scorpio burst onto the scene? Yep, and that means we're now imminently approaching the ninth sign of the zodaic: Sagittarius!
Another artwork where I wanted to create an old parchment of paper revealing the dragon behind - in this case a scorching hot one...
This type of picture gives my ex-hubby and web-developer no end of palpitations, due to things like the illusory parchment's edges ending up a little too close to the edges of the actual watercolour paper for comfort!
So a little tip if you are a fellow creator of art: always leave plenty of space around the edges! When it comes to the scanning/digitizing/printing processes, you'll want some wiggle-room to play with...
Once again there's a straightforward colour palette employed in this image. Sagittarius being a fire sign means creating a dragon using reds, oranges and yellows. Both paint and colored pencils are used here.
These bright fiery colours get contrasted against the background, created from a wash of black paint. Naturally, the black background also provides the necessary contrast for the parched and torn paper effects...
In order to help connect it all together, I wanted some of the dragon's horns and body, plus the arrow, to be interwoven with the the paper.
The parchment itself is designed as an old book page, in Latin, describing the sign of Sagittarius...
So there you go - another month flies by, and another astrological release zoom's into view
